What if there’s another way of thinking about work-life balance?
A few weeks ago, I facilitated the Leadership Game with alumni of PROJECT CONQUER MASTERMIND. It was a small group but, HOT DAMN, was it powerful! Don’t let the word “game” in Leadership Game fool you. A colleague of mine has facilitated this three times with Bank of Canada. Leadership Game is legit!

Something that’s still resonating is what a participant shared about work-life balance. She referred to it as work-life regulation. Or rather, regulating work and life.
Here’s how this stands out to me.
I don’t know how much ‘balance’ I have in my life. But I sure know that there are seasons where work/business needs to be the focus. Or times of the week where fitness takes the front seat. Or when faith and family are the priority.
So perhaps it’s not about striving for balance. But rather, re-deploying time, attention and energy to the important pillars in your life, at the right time.
Ultimately the result is the same, but we’re tackling it in another way. A way that hopefully resonates stronger.

Personal pillars
In your personal life, what are the 3-5 pillars that are most important to you? Being aware of these and calling them out is crucial in knowing when to divert time, attention and energy.
Consider the 5Fs:
- Faith
- Family
- Fitness
- Finances (including work/business)
- Fun
👉🏽 On a weekly, daily or monthly basis, when do you need to pay attention to each of these pillars?
Leadership pillars
As you’re evolving in your leadership, can you think of pillars that can help keep you grounded?
Here are five common pillars or principles that are often associated with effective leadership:
- Vision
- Integrity
- Communication
- Influence
- Adaptability
👉🏽 On a weekly, daily or monthly basis, when do you need to pay attention to each of these pillars?
So what?
Regulating pillars in your personal and professional leadership is key. This will help you show up with more intention and awareness, and NOT on accident. It will also optimize peak performance.
And just when you think you’re operating at a peak level, I guarantee there’s another mode you can unlock to CONQUER your full potential …. 😉! … you like how I tied that in eh??
