Ever heard of the CEO Framework?
Probably not, because the version I’m talking about came out of a coaching session with a senior leader in the non-profit sector.
I had to cancel the initial session with this leader due to an urgent priority that came up. So you best believe I was on my A-Game! It was GO TIME babyyyyyy! 😁
We focused on communication and accountability, but to be honest, the entire session was absolute gold! GOLD JERRY GOLD (Seinfeld anyone? 😁)

CEO FRAMEWORK
To support this leaders journey, we developed the CEO Framework in real-time .. during the session:
- CONNECT – Build genuine connections with team members and understand their needs.
- Set EXPECTATIONS – Clearly define goals, roles, and responsibilities to minimize confusion. Fun fact: role clarity is also a key ingredient in a psychologically safe environment.
- Provide OPTIONS – Create space and time for options, empowering the team/staff to identify the preferred solution. Think of this piece as a choose-your-own-adventure book!
This framework serves as a reminder that as leaders, you’re the ‘CEOs’ of your teams and departments.
“But Parm, I’m not leading a team. You’re saying I can’t be a CEO? What the hell man!”
No no, that’s not what I’m saying.
Remember, we’re all leaders in some way. If you’re not leading a team, you’re likely leading yourself: self-leadership.
You’re the CEO of your life so this framework applies in this context too:
- CONNECT – Check in with yourself daily. Reflect on your emotions, goals, and progress.
- Set EXPECTATIONS – Be realistic about what you can achieve and establish clear priorities. How can you break your larger goals down to baby steps … lower the barrier to entry. And remember, what doesn’t get measured, doesn’t get done!
- Provide OPTIONS – Explore creative solutions when facing personal challenges, giving yourself the flexibility to adapt. Plan A? Plan B? or maybe a mix of both – Plan A-B!
Consider the CEO Framework as one of the personal growth strategies you use!
Here are some other nuggets of gold from our coaching session.
Adapting to change with confidence
Relocation is never fun.
Just ask anyone who’s tried moving a couch up a staircase. It didn’t work out well for Ross, Rachel and Chandler in Friends, now did it! 🤪
But this leader and his team handled a recent move like a group of pros. From shifting furniture to managing unexpected time-off requests, this individual proved that leadership is about staying calm and thoughtful even if everything else might be in chaos.
This highlights the importance of fostering a culture of resilience and collaboration, especially during times of change.
Communication and transparency
Effective communication is the backbone of any successful team.
This leader’s emphasis on honesty, transparency, and trust within his team was a reminder that open dialogue is essential, especially when navigating disagreements or addressing financial constraints.
We discussed practical strategies like setting clear expectations and creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to streamline communication and build trust.
Remember, with honesty, comes great responsibility. Being honest also means being kind. It does NOT mean telling your co-worker that their sweater is ugly! Please don’t do that.
Balancing leadership and approachability
This leader’s management style blends kindness with resourcefulness, showing that leadership doesn’t have to mean being overly serious or authoritative.
From repurposing old office chairs to engaging in casual conversations with his team, he builds connections that enhance team engagement while maintaining professional boundaries.
What comes to mind is, kind leadership.
As we bring all of this in for a landing, don’t forget, leadership isn’t just about managing others. It’s about managing yourself (without losing your mind).
Whether you’re leading a team or just trying to survive your to-do list, remember, progress over pace.
And a little dry humour or sarcasm never hurts. 😏
