Self-leadership – You doin’ it?

Others might listen to you. But how often do you listen to yourself?
 
“But Parm – NO ONE EVER listens to me 😟.” – Another topic for another day 😏.
 
When leading others, keep in mind that you also need to lead yourself. What story do you tell yourself that prevents you from growing, evolving or adapting? We all have a tendency to get in our own way. Or quite often, we’re so busy leading others … doing the work, we fail to look up and assess how we’re doing as an individual. (Making sure I spell “assess” correctly.)

Typically, self-care is what I would focus on right now … but in the spirit of self-leadership … never ask your people to do something, go somewhere or make a commitment that you wouldn’t.

💥 Have you recently asked your team to work extra hours to finish a project? Did you put in extra hours?
💥 Have you asked your team to reschedule vacation days because of deadlines? Did you reschedule your vacation time?
💥 Do you expect your team to get the job done when you throw last minute things at them? Do you work to meet last minute demands?

These are all pretty trivial examples, but point being, you have to consider yourself as part of the collective. Not separate or higher from it.

𝖡𝖾 𝗂𝗇 𝗍𝗁𝖾 𝗍𝗋𝖾𝗇𝖼𝗁𝖾𝗌 𝗐𝗂𝗍𝗁 𝗒𝗈𝗎𝗋 𝗉𝖾𝗈𝗉𝗅𝖾

Some of the best leaders I’ve worked with are those that were in the trenches with me.
 
One example comes to mind from my Town of Caledon days. It was municipal election time in 2018/2019 I believe. One of the advance polling days fell on the same date as my wife’s and my wedding anniversary. Being the all-star husband I am, I had made plans … 😁.
 
My director at the time had asked more than once if I was able to help out at a particular polling station because there would be value in having someone that speaks Punjabi .. me .. considering the demographics of the residents in the area.
 
Finally, I said yes for a few different reasons, all positive. My wife came down to the polling station and heckled me of course! 😜.
 
This director was with us at that polling station. And bought lunch for everyone – deep dish pizza. YUP, it was an unscheduled cheat meal. NOPE I wasn’t sorry!
 
When I left early he was fully supportive and wished my wife and I a happy anniversary.
 
He was in the trenches with us.
 
So what Parm? Why you always gotta bring food into your lessons?
 
Food aside … as you direct others, lead by example. Lead by doing, not by telling. Because ultimately, if you can’t lead yourself towards some kind of growth or transformation, what business do you have leading others?
