Re-framing praise

Re-framing praise

Do you have a hard time accepting compliments or receiving praise? YUP! Thought so! Me too!

Here’s a way to re-frame this – coming out of a coaching conversation with an Executive Director in the non-profit sector. We were discussing how to make it easier when receiving a compliment or praise.

Here’s what we landed on – the re-frame. This is A WAY, not THE WAY. Receiving a compliment or praise could be a two-step process.

Step 1: A compliment/praise is given

Receiving a compliment or praise is more about the person giving it than the one receiving it. When someone offers a compliment, they’re expressing their thanks, appreciation, or kindness. Maybe because they’re super excited, grateful, or the thing you did impacted them in such a way they simply HAVE to let you know!

By brushing off a compliment, you deny the other person the opportunity to share their perspective, emotions or thoughts.

The initial act of receiving a compliment is not about you. It’s about the feelings bubbling up for the other person.

Step 2: What you do with the compliment/praise is your business

Once you receive a compliment, simply say “thank you” to acknowledge what the other person has said.

What you do with the compliment afterwards is up to you.

  • Can you use it to cultivate further humility?
  • Can it be leveraged to enhance your skills?
  • Are you able to use the opportunity to shine a spotlight on the rest of the team?
  • Is the compliment a marker that you’re on the right track?

How you respond and leverage the compliment is where your personal growth and excellence come into play.

💥 Embrace the recognition and use it as a stepping stone to CONQUER YOUR POTENTIAL!
