Newcomers are natural born leaders

This time, the tables were turned.

Instead of me doing the interviewing, I was in the hot seat, joining Mansi, host of Elevate: A DBNC Leadership Podcast.

Here’s the truth: newcomers often underestimate the leadership skills they already bring with them.

But think about it .. when you’re new to a country, every single day requires courage and making decisions without certainty.

That’s leadership in action and takes:

✅ Situational awareness

✅ Empathy

✅ Communication

✅ Leading through ambiguity

✅ Accountability

Sound familiar? These are the same qualities we admire in great leaders.

Leadership framing

If you’re a newcomer, here’s a powerful tip: start framing your story through the lens of leadership.

When you share newcomer experience, whether in interviews or networking conversations, don’t just talk about what you did. Highlight the leadership skills you practiced .. courage, adaptability, communication, accountability.

This not only shows resilience, it proves you’re already leading in action.

Don’t forget to connect the dots for others. Frame your journey with leadership language:

“Moving to a new country taught me accountability and resilience.”
“Navigating uncertainty built my situational awareness and communication skills.”

It’s not just your story .. it’s evidence of your leadership in action.

👉 What’s one leadership skill you’ve developed through your own journey?
