Lessons from Mom

As I reflect back on the last six months, while mom was still here battling stage 4 cancer, there’s so much she taught us.

To not give up when saying, “I’m not ready to roll over and die just yet.”

To remain brave as she said, “I’m not afraid to die.”

What stands out the most is when I had a chance to sit with mom a few months ago. She was still in full MOM MODE … 😊.

I asked, “Mom, what does the world need most right now?”

She simply replied, “Kindness.”

As we go about our daily lives juggling everything we do, let’s make full intention to live with more kindness, lead with more kindness and serve with more kindness.

🔅 LESSON: Be more kind.

MOM MODE was still in full effect when she was very quick to tell me what I need to work on personally… how I needed to grow and evolve.

I was like “Mom, that wasn’t even the question I asked.” … 😁. We both laughed hard.

Whether I wanted to hear it or not, she would always be straight up, telling me what I needed to hear, but in her loving mom way.

🔅 LESSON: Always work on yourself.

The last MOM MODE example was when she kept secretly passing unopened juice boxes to us every time we would visit her in the hospital.

In her defence, mom was told that the juice boxes would be thrown out whether she drank them or not.

She also said, “Puth (son), these juice boxes will come in handy one day. Take them home and keep them.”

She was right.

Any guests that have come over to the house, one of the things we’ve served them is juice. Mom had a hand, literally, in serving that juice.

What can I say, mom was resourceful.

🔅 LESSON: Appreciate the food we’ve been blessed with. Don’t let it go to waste.

Now that she’s gone, as a family…

…we rebuild. One day at a time.
…we accept reality and do our best to move forward with grace and strength.
…we live out what she taught us.

I share this with you because at some point every single one of us will experience loss. When that happens, let’s do our best to learn from the person who’s no longer with us, remember the good times and rebuild with acceptance. Easier said than done – but intention to do so is what will carry us, one day at a time.

If you’ve lost someone that you care deeply about, leave a comment. I would love to hear the lessons you learned from them.

🌹 Until we meet again 🌹
