Influence? Ya sure?

Influence? Ya sure?

A few months I had the privilege of facilitating a training for a high-performing team at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Some of them didn’t resonate with the word INFLUENCE. And that’s all good.

You see, I shared a perspective on what leadership is. I go into detail when I talk through the Leadership Formula which is something I’ve developed, in that Leadership is Influence (in an ethical and appropriate way). And to build Influence, you need Connection.

If you don’t have Connection with your people, what are the chances you’ll have true Influence and Leadership with them❓

I absolutely LOVED the discussion on whether Influence was the right language, considering the sometimes negative connotation of the word. If not Influence, then perhaps it’s Inspiration, Community, Mobilize – anything that moves people, that gets them “to do”.

As with all the training experiences I facilitate and coaching sessions I lead, I often say, take what makes sense, leave what doesn’t. So that we can shift from consuming for information to consuming for insight, when appropriate. Because even a one degree shift in insight can drastically change your perspective of the world.

As with most trainings, I offer a Playbook which is a summary of insights and action items that participants share. Here are three highlights from the Playbook I presented to the leader of this team. Maybe there’s something here for you to take if it makes sense, and leave what doesn’t:

  • Develop purpose statements for team interactions to promote clarity and alignment.
  • Use open-ended questions to solicit feedback and create space for diverse perspectives in decision-making processes.
  • Incorporate discussions on living and leading from values as a regular agenda item in meetings.

I’m curious, when you hear the word Leadership – what comes to mind? What does Leadership mean to you❓
