When we think of someone as “alpha,” what typically comes to mind?
Yup! We’re thinking the same thing. Loud. Aggressive. Always needing to dominate the room.
(Think, the Hulk, all the time, every time! 😡)
This version of “alpha” is outdated and NEVER worked in the first place!
In a recent ConquerCast conversation, I shared what I believe true alpha leadership actually looks like.
A true alpha is someone who is:
- Kind
- Inviting
- Assertive (not aggressive)
- In control of themselves
- Empathetic with others
This isn’t soft. This is strength with awareness.
(Think, a healthy mix of Bruce Banner and the Hulk! 🤓 + 💪🏽)

And here’s what most people miss: True alpha leadership is rooted in emotional intelligence.
WHAT? YUP! 🙂
16 hours
I’m excited to share that after 16 hours of in-class learning, taught by one of the top emotional intelligence experts in the field (Carolyn Stern), I’m now officially a certified EQ-i 2.0 coach and facilitator.
This matters because it deepens how I serve leaders and teams through:
- Emotional intelligence coaching
- Leadership development
- Team engagement and culture work
So what?
“What’s the deal with emotional intelligence?”
(Seinfeld anyone?)
Imagine someone who struggles with public speaking or speaking up in meetings. Maybe you?
You can give them all the speaker tips in the world:
- Better slides
- Stronger openers
- More eye contact
But if fear is running the show, no amount of speaker training will stick! Because the issue isn’t skill, it’s what’s happening under the surface.
This is where emotional intelligence comes in. EI helps us understand WHY the fear exists in the first place, and what to do about it.
What we’re really working on
Through the EQ-i 2.0 framework, we look at five key areas:
- Self-Perception: How you see yourself. Confidence, self-regard, and self-awareness.
- Self-Expression: How you communicate thoughts and emotions clearly and appropriately.
- Interpersonal Skills: How you build trust and maintain real, two-way relationships.
- Decision Making: How you balance logic and emotion to make sound choices.
- Stress Management: How you stay flexible, grounded, and effective under pressure.
When these are strengthened, we build competence, confidence and certainty! And then, and only then, do tips like pitch, pace, pause presence actually land.
Emotional intelligence isn’t separate from leadership.
It IS leadership.
It’s ALPHA leadership done right!
If you’re curious, or even mildly interested, in developing your emotional intelligence for leadership, performance, or team impact, I’d love to explore that with you.
Together, let’s Conquer your EI.
