It took me about a five days, but I finally got a chance to watch the replay of a workshop that the Centre for Creative Leadership (CCL) held last week. The topic was strategies to support the leaders of tomorrow.
..learning NEVER stops.
One of the things that got me thinking, CCL shared that of those interviewed in their study, over 80% of young leaders (18-35) have had leadership experiences that have NOT come in a formal capacity. As in, a formal leadership role. And that’s great!
There are many ways to build leadership presence, and it doesn’t always happen in a formal title/role. When this is the case specifically for aspiring leaders, it means that ideas coming from this group could be creative and DIFFERENT than what’s typical.
Different can be good. Among many reasons and specifically in the context of this week’s lesson:
šš½ Different allows others to develop their leadership presence in non-traditional ways
šš½ Different moves us towards our growth zone
šš½ Different challenges what’s currently not working
And here’s a secret … building a safe space for leadership development AND working through that process – ohhhhh man, that’s where the magic is! Learn a little, do a little.
And to top it all off, as CCL shared, tying all of this together with VALUES as the foundation … c’mon now! That’s how it’s done!
So what?
What’s the takeaway from all of this?
š„ Encourage aspiring leaders around you to seek out non-traditional leadership opportunities. And then allow for a safe space for them to apply what they’ve learned.
š„ You yourself look for non-traditional leadership opportunities. Because whether you have a formal leadership role or not, that ‘different’ could allow for some creative freedom in further developing your leadership presence. And lessons learned can be applied in real time as you lead yourself and your people.

Let’s finish Q4 strong šŖš½.
