What do you get when you mix a British guy, a U.S. guy and a British-Canadian guy?
An afternoon of world-class lessons in public speaking and business development, that’s what! This summer, I had the pleasure of learning from two incredible coaches and mentors.
Roddy is an all-star public speaking coach, and a lot of my speaking and facilitation style comes from him. Two key takeaways I’ve learned over the years .. the magic of storytelling and SLOW DOWN. The power of the pause is real!
Chris is a business strategy rockstar. Whether it’s pricing, growth, or just getting unstuck, his biggest lesson I’ve adopted over the years is GET OUT. By that I mean, get out of the house … network, connect.
Speaking of connecting, here’s some gold from Roddy we can all do to connect better with others.
I don’t claim to do these all these time, but the intention is there. Sometimes my networking and connecting game is ON POINT. Other times I’m moody and want to be left alone. I know you’re the same at times, don’t judge! 😁
Here’s how you can up-level your connection:
- Smile.
- Make eye contact.
- Use their name.
- Have a firm handshake.
- Give them your undivided attention.
- Be interested in them.
- Listen to them attentively.
- Give the odd sincere compliment.
- Ask their opinion.
- Affirm them.
- Encourage them.
- Excuse their past failures.
- Normalize their fears.
- Give them hope.
- Find common ground with them.
- You go to them and you go first.
- Put a 10 on their head, see them at their best.
- Use humour.
- Be authentic.
- Share your failures.
You’re one conversation, connection or relationship away from a business boom or a massive breakthrough.
