Last week I was sharing with you when I had facilitated a conflict resolution training for a group of aspiring healthcare leaders. I touched on a Conflict Resolution Style assessment that highlights five different ways you may process and manage conflict.
If you missed it, check it out here: SO MUCH CONFLICT.
Today we’re continuing along the same lines but changing our relationship to conflict.
“Parm, you can’t talk about conflict without talking about conflict. You nuts?” – hear me out.
I recently had a coaching conversation with a senior leader. We were unpacking her Clifton Strengths report. One of her top 5 strengths is Harmony.

Whenever I debrief on Clifton Strengths, we always discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each strength. One of the potential drawbacks or blind spots that came up in our conversation is that someone with strong Harmony may not like conflict, or may shy away/run away from conflict.
So we worked on reframing what it could look like when conflict shows up. What if we convert conflict resolution to harmony boost? Let’s change the language we use.
Meaning that, instead of trying to manage the conflict, how can you boost the harmony between two individuals?
I could see the sense of relief and noticed a big deep breath that this leader let out once we got to this point. That’s because conflict can be stressful. It can be nerve-wrecking. What if we simply change the narrative and language to: HARMONY BOOST.
The words we use matter. Change language, reframe concepts, show up more intentionally.
Conquer your harmony.
